CMA Communications Training

The CMA has partnered with the PR Academy to deliver training in communications and media skills for the past few years. The PR Academy is built on years of professional and academic experience in the Communications industry. Our courses reflect industry change and trends and are delivered from the perspective of a PR professional.

Our founder, Ellen Gunning, has been working in the PR industry for the past 25 years and is author of the core text “Public Relations: A Practical Approach” (Macmillan Higher Education UK, 3rd Edition, October 2018), which is studied by third level students internationally.

She has drawn together a team of worldwide, world-class professionals who tutor our courses and bring real-world experience to our training.

Our trainers include TV and radio presenters, PR professionals, content creators, journalists, academics, marketeers, and leadership and empowerment coaches. These trainers are based in Ireland, USA, Colombia, Canada and New Zealand. We also work with partner colleges in Greece, Nigeria and the Middle East.

Welcome Message from the Executive Director

Rob DeFrancesco

The Catholic Media Association is a leader in supporting, strengthening, and promoting Catholic journalists and media professionals. Our members join for a variety of reasons. Some join for networking and career growth, others for the faith and fellowship of our community, and some simply for our awards program. Whatever your reason for joining, the Catholic Media Association is always looking for resources to help you thrive in your career.

A couple of years ago, the CMA identified communications training as a key requirement. We looked for a company that specialized in training in this area, and, in particular, we wanted a company with a global focus so that our members were getting not only best practice training, but international insights as well.

We partnered with the PR Academy, based in Ireland, and have been working with them for the past two years. They have been delivering programs, via Zoom, on media interview techniques, social media strategy, content creation, smartphone journalism and much more. Without exception, feedback from members has been universally positive. They have struck a chord with everyone they have trained and delivered valuable, knowledgeable skill enhancements to our members.

We are continuing to partner with the PR Academy for the coming year and have agreed to sponsor an enhanced program of training, encompassing not only communications, but leadership skills as well.

These professional development opportunities are made possible thanks to the USCCB Catholic Communication Campaign. Members pay a fraction of the course fees. This training is incredibly good value.

We look forward to seeing more members take these courses in the coming year, and to continuing to work with the PR Academy into the future.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, or to the Academy, if there are training needs that we are not addressing below.

Introduction

Training Objective: To introduce AI in communications and give an overview of Chat GPT.

In this section the trainer will introduce you to artificial intelligence in general, and to Chat GPT in particular. He will focus on 5 key things you need to understand about this powerful tech. He will explain the difference between the human mind and artificial intelligence, and he will explain the necessity of using good prompts to get good answers.

Learning Outcome: Understand the basic concept of AI, its use in PR and Communication, and gain a working understanding of Chat GPT.

Using Chat GPT for Content Creation and Copywriting

Training Objective: To demonstrate how Chat GPT can be used for content creation and copywriting.

Content creation and copywriting are time consuming for both pr and journalism professionals. Copy is important. Getting meaning and understanding is vital. Projecting the right message is crucial. Sometimes, its hard to know where to begin. In this session, Dominik will show you how to use ChatGPT to get you kick started. How to have it generate text and copy for you, so that you have the starter that you can amend, refine, edit and polish. Using ChatGPT as an ‘assistant’ will save you hours of time.

Learning Outcome: Grasp the basics of using Chat GPT for creating engaging content and effective copywriting.

Using Chat GPT for Research and Analysis

Training Objective: To understand the use of Chat GPT in conducting research and analysis.

Whether you are trying to figure out if a crisis like this has happened before, or if there is an existing solution to your problem, or you want to know how many people have been affected by something, or how much it has cost , you need to conduct research. Research which bears your name must be thorough and 100% reliable. Chat GPT can help you with your initial research. It makes it much easier and quicker to check something from multiple angles so that you can establish how you want to present your findings. You need to be careful and cross-check all of the information, but it will do initial heavy-lifting for you.

Learning Outcome: Comprehend the basics of using Chat GPT for research and analysis tasks.

Limitations and Ethical Considerations of Chat GPT

Training Objective: To explain the limitations of Chat GPT and the ethical considerations of using AI in PR and Communication.

Like any tool that we use in modern communications, ChatGPT has its limitations. This session will give you not only an appreciation of the power of the tool, but will also give you a healthy respect for how it can mislead or hallucinate. You will understand the foundations on which it is built and the ethical issues which it gives rise to.

Learning Outcome: Understand the limitations of Chat GPT and how to use it ethically and responsibly.
